The UCL Women in Earth Science group, a year in review.

The UCL Women in Earth Science group was launched in March of this year and over the past nine months has put on career events, hosted fascinating lectures from inspiring women from across the globe and even held a virtual get together on Gather.Town.

In April, we were very fortunate to hear from Dr Phoebe Cohen, an Associate Professor in Geosciences at Williams College. Dr Phoebe Cohen is a palaeontologist who uses a wide variety of microscopic and microchemical techniques, combined with data from field-based stratigraphy and sedimentology, to reconstruct ancient organisms and ecosystems. She is actively involved in justice, equity, diversity and inclusion work in her discipline, at Williams and beyond, most recently as a founding organizer of URGE.听
Then to continue our series of incredible talks, in October, WiES was delighted to have Prof. Sara Seagar join us and to talk about her work on exoplanets and career in science. Prof. Sara Seager is an astrophysicist and a professor of physics and planetary science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is known for her pioneering research of exoplanets and their atmospheres. For her research Sara was awarded a MacArthur "genius" grant, and has Asteroid 9729 named in her honour.听
In addition to events, the WiES mentor scheme has also been founded and we already have fifteen mentors from a wide variety of sectors ranging from Carbon Capture, journalism, academia, and industry.
