New Undergraduate Students visit Cumberland Lodge for 'Historians and Climate Change' themed welcome

Two cohorts of new UCL History students visited Cumberland Lodge to round off induction week, with discussions and seminars on the theme of 'Historians and Climate Change'.
Every year at the end of induction week, UCL History takes incoming undergraduate students on a one-night residential trip to Cumberland Lodge in Windsor Great Park. Students and staff are given the opportunity to attend lectures, seminars and discussions on a historical theme; this year, students considered 'Historians and Climate Change'.
The first cohort of students left UCL on Friday afternoon, and on arrival attended a lecture given by Dr John Sabapathy on 'What does the Climate Crisis mean for Historians?'. This was followed by dinner, and a wonferful History Society Quiz! Saturday morning saw a round table on 'Being a Historian at University' with UCL History Society Representatives, followed by a lecture given by Dr Florence Sutcliffe-Braithwaite on 'Women in the Miners鈥� Strike: Activism, Experience and Long-Term Impacts' (you can read more about her AHRC funded project on this subject here). After lunch, a second round table on took place, on the topic of 'Historians and Climate Change', which was Chaired by Dr Patrick Lantschner and included Prof. Eleanor Robson (ancient Middle East), Dr John Sabapathy (medieval Europe), Dr Chloe Ireton (early modern Atlantic world), Dr Jon Chandler (eighteenth-century Britain).
At around 4pm on Saturday, it was time for Cohort 1 to head back to London, at Cohort 2 to arrive! Saturday evening involved a lecture from Professor Jason Peacey on 'Popular Politics and the Little Ice Age in 1640s England', followed by dinner, a further round table on 'Being a Historian at University' with UCL History Society Representatives, and quiz! Sunday morning saw Dr Sophie Page give a lecture on 'Nature, Ethics and Animals in Late Medieval Europe', Cohort 2 then enjoying their round table discussion on 'Historians and Climate Change', but swapping Dr Sabapathy for Dr Page in the line up!
Despite some pretty horrible weather, both cohorts had a wonderful time making friends, meeting staff, and getting their brains focussed on historical thinking after a long summer off!
