Visitor and other person types

People associated with UCL are entitled to a range of services depending on their status. The list below gives a brief description of the different statuses. Visitor types, administered through the Services System, are highlighted in Bold.

Person Type/Role Name Description
Established StaffStaff on the UCL payroll. Most services are supplied automatically once the person is recorded in the HR system.
Honorary StaffHonorary staff have unpaid UCL appointments. As with established staff, details are recorded in the HR system. Most services are supplied automatically with the notable exception of Central Computing accounts
Associate StaffEmployees not on the payroll but requiring staff access to UCL services to perform their jobs. This includes employees of UCL Business plc and agency/temporary staff in administrative positions. Services must be requested where necessary. 
Visiting LecturerAcademic or research staff from other HE institutions invited to collaborate or lecture on a casual basis - e.g. receiving one-off payments after the event but requiring access to resources beforehand (see also Occasional Lecturer).
Occasional LecturerVisitors with no institutional links invited to lecture or collaborate on a casual basis. They may receive one-off payments after the event but requiring access to resources beforehand (see also Visiting Lecturer/Reseacher).
NHS StaffNHS Staff not entitled to honorary contracts e.g. those occupying space within UCL buildings whilst working with UCL departments
ContractorContractor working in the department [Note: the Contractor visitor type is intended primarily for the use of UCL Estates contractors. For contract staff employed to cover established posts or other temporary positions, use the Associate Staff role.]
Work PlacementVisitor working as a volunteer in the department
UndergraduateUndergraduate student as recorded in Portico. Most services will be provided automatically.
PostgraduatePostgraduate student as recorded in Portico. Most services will be provided automatically.
Intercollegiate/Affiliate studentsStudents from other institutions taking modules °ÄÃÅÀúÊ·¿ª½±¼Ç¼. These students should be registered in Portico and will receive access to services automatically.
Continuing Education StudentStudent attending a continuing education course hosted by the department. The department may be expected to pay for some services from course fees.
Professional Development Student Student attending a professional development course hosted by the department. The department may be expected to pay for some services from course fees.
Language Centre Student - GeneralStudent attending a pre-sessional or general language centre course.
Short course Student - Dept administeredShort course student where the course is run by the department
Visitor'Other' visitors - e.g. students visiting informally, members of the public, independent researchers, etc. The department may be expected to pay for some services.
