History of UCL

A collection of some of UCL's historic records.

The institutional archive dates from UCL’s foundation in 1826, and covers most of our departments and activities.ÌýWe hold records of our foundation, including the original Charter of 1836, minutes and correspondence, and records of students and staff. Collection Descriptions

College Archives (UCLCA)

The institutional archive consists of UCL’s records from its foundation in 1826 to the present day. It comprises over 1500 boxes, and 2000 volumes, as well as architectural drawings, card indexes, governance records, staff and student files, and records of general administration.

Digitised material includes:

  • The and papers are a small collection of images from our records covering the students who came to UCL from Japan in the mid-19th century and were the founders of modern Japan.
  • :ÌýThe Council is UCL’s governing body. Minutes are available here from 1825 to 1920.
  • The first volume of our , covering 1828-1829, is currently available. More will be added in the future.

Published works and ephemeral material on the history of UCL and people connected with it, including its official publications, such as Calendars and Annual Reports, and items that document its foundation and governance, such as Charters, Bye-Laws and lists of Proprietors.

Digitised material includes
