It was during the decade prior to the First World War that RWSW became deeply interested in the history and politics of Central Europe and the Balkans. His involvement began with his arrival in 1905 for studies at Vienna University. He travelled widely thoughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire and published a number of books on the conflicts that existed between nationalities within the Empire.
