Formed in 1988, the Academia Europaea (AE) is the pan-European academy of science, humanities and letters, with a membership of over 5,500 eminent scholars, drawn from all countries of Europe, and all disciplines, nationalities and geographical locations.

Amongst them are eighty-seven Nobel Laureates, several of whom were elected to the Academia before they received the prize.听

The object of AE is the advancement and propagation of excellence in scholarship in the humanities, law, the economic, social, and political sciences, mathematics, medicine, and all branches of natural and technological sciences anywhere in the world. One of the key aims is the advancement of public education covering all ages in the aforementioned subjects.

Professor Thanh commented: 鈥淚t is a great honour to be elected as a member of the AE. It is wonderful to mingle with great minds not only in natural and technological sciences, medicine, mathematics, but also humanities, law, the economic, social, and political social sciences. We need collective efforts to tackle huge international challenges we are facing today and in the future.鈥�

The Academy organises meetings and workshops, publishes the international journal the 'European Review' and is associated to Biology Direct and provides science advice to the European Commission through SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies).听
