Description
This module will introduce you to topics in applied psychology (e.g. educational psychology, psychopathology and counselling, criminal psychology and neuropsychology/science) with an emphasis on their relevance in everyday life. There is less emphasis on particular psychological theories and who did what experiment in what year, and more focus on 鈥渉ow does this knowledge transfer to real life situations.鈥澨
Teaching Delivery
One weekly two-hour lecture and fortnightly optional seminars.
Indicative Topics
The module will cover the following topics, which may be subject to variation depending on developments in academic research and the interests of the class:
- Mental Health across the Lifespan & Mental Health Literacy听
- Crime, Delinquency, Pro/Anti-social behaviour and Morality听
- Developmental psychopathology 鈥 with a focus on the development of psychological disorders and typical/atypical child development.听
- Learning: cognitive development, memory and the psychology of learning.听
- Social Groups: In-groups and out-groups, bullying, racism and inclusive practice.听
- Psychoanalysis, Sleep and Dreams 听
- Psychological testing and scales听
Module Aims and Objectives
- An understanding of the application of different types of psychology (e.g. cognitive, forensic, social, developmental) to practice;听听
- An appreciation of the distance between psychological research, the lab and the 鈥榬eal world鈥;听听听
- An ability to look behind the presentation of the science in the media;听听听
- To be able to identify and develop an idea in a real word setting.听
