Description
The aim of the module is to provide students with the basic principles of bioprocess analysis and design so they can apply these to define and evaluate whole bioprocess sequences. The module provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the:
- fundamentals of the principal bioprocess unit operations;
- the principles of mass balancing in process analysis, specifically within the following unit operations:
- cell culture processes and product release;
- solid-liquid separations and
- chromatography operations; and
- process specifications and design principles for biopharmaceuticals

At the end of the module the students are expected to be able to:
Ìý
- define a Ìýblock flow diagram of a unit operation or a sequence of unit operations based on a given process description;
- perform overall and component mass balance for individual unit operations (cell culture and product release, solid-liquid separations and chromatography) and for a sequence of unit operations;
- identify relevant parameters which define and influence bioprocess unit operations (cell culture and product release, solid-liquid separations and chromatography);
- identify key terms and concepts in relation to biochemical reaction engineering, bioprocess facility design and good manufacturing practice (GMP); and to
- compare and contrast bioprocessing requirements of different biotechnological or biological products
