The Engineering and International Development module will introduce the concepts of development and help students assess the role of engineering in the development process by engaging with theory and research. It will explore the relationship between engineering, education and community in contexts of poverty and inequality. Although the focus of development work is typically on low- and middle-income countries, the focus of this module is to develop within students a mindset that is applicable to any community-led sustainable development project.
Learning Outcomes – Upon completion of this course you should be able to:
- Define the term ‘international development’;
- Identify some of the major drivers and constraints (including societal, economic, institutional and environmental) that must be considered when developing sustainable infrastructure;
- Identify common reasons for both success and failure in international development projects.
