Description
The module tackles the uses and the meaning of the notion of 'Republic' in France today: from the radical left to the far right, most political forces and politicians repeatedly refer to the ‘Republic’ and to its central pillar ‘Laïcité’ (which organises the separation of the Church and the State). It concentrates on the emergence of a new interpretation of republicanism: this new take shapes an unofficial definition of ‘Frenchness’ which, in some cases, may be exclusive and 'communitarian'. This new narrative seems to depart from the inclusive and universal conception of its origins. The topic is discussed in relation to current political issues in France such as terrorism, identity politics, the rise of the far right (Rassemblement National), Islamophobia and racism. The course discusses republicanism in French society today: its functions, its meaning, and how it shapes representations with regards to the questions of equality, solidarity and diversity.
