Description
This is a research-led and research-based module, providing an introduction to the fields of cultural and historical geography. It has a slightly different emphasis to other modules because it aims to do this by exploring some of the philosophies and methodologies used to create cultural and historical geographies, and is designed to give you the experience and confidence to undertake your own independent research using UCL’s museum and archive collections. The module encourages students to think critically about questions of representation, different kinds of materials, forms of analysis, and engage with questions of politics and ethics.
Lecture material is drawn from the lecturer(s)’s own research and from that of other geographers, historians and others, and can include topics from a range of textual and visual sources such as paintings, maps, photographs, printed archives and digital newspaper archives.
GEOG0029 is designed to provide a bridge between first year modules and cultural and historical modules in the third year and can complement Methods in Human Geography.
The module aims to
- examine practices of research in cultural and historical geography,
- explore the representation of space, place and landscape in different as well as questions of reception and politics.
The module is taught through a mixture of lectures, practicals and seminars. The lectures cover some key themes in cultural and historical Geography which may include representation; digital archives ; mapping and landscape; ways of analyzing forms of reception. The series of practicals allows students to engage with objects from UCL's collections and to practice new skills of analysis. The module includes a lecture on reflective writing, highlighting the themes of the second part of the assessment.
