- History of the Soviet Union (HIST0499)
This module examines the history of the Soviet Union from the 1917 Revolution to the collapse of the USSR in 1991. It both explores the central lines of social, cultural, political and economic development over this period and places them within the context of broader questions about the Bolshevik revolution, Stalinism and its aftermath, late socialism, the Cold War and modern world history more globally. We will look at how the question of the Soviet Union's diverse nationalities was addressed in different periods by different Soviet rulers. We will also explore the ways in which the Soviet leaders and the population attempted to build a society of new Soviet people and how this society functioned on a daily basis.
