Teaching Delivery: This module is taught over 2 terms, in 10 x 2 hour classes taught by the main tutor and 20 x 1 hour PGTA-led seminars in each of terms 1 and 2.Ìý
Content: A study of Classical Latin language and literature, involving the reading and translation into English of prose and verse set texts, their grammatical analysis and literary criticism, consideration of metre,Ìýand the further consolidation and development of students' knowledge of Classical Latin language, through the study of syntax and the reading of a range of passages from Classical Latin texts. The module is designed for those who already have a good A-level knowledge of the language or have passed Intermediate Latin B. It prepares students for studying whole works in the original language and therefore provides a step towards our higher-level Latin literature courses taught in the original.Ìý
The module consists of three elements: i) the reading of sections of Classical Latin prose or verse which students prepare in advance and read in class. Classes also provide an opportunity to consider grammatical issues and to discuss issues of literary significance; (ii) the consolidation of the principles of Latin language and syntax; and (iii) practice in reading and translating passages from Latin texts.
Skills: By the end of the module, students should have a good knowledge of Classical Latin language, be trained to translate fluently from Latin into English and be able to analyse linguistic features of a text in relation to its content.Ìý

Text term 2: Selections from Cicero's Verrine orations. The module tutor will provide copies of the sections of the Verrine orations to be studied, with additional materials to assist students in translating the text.Ìý
Guidance as to recommended textbooks on Latin grammar will be issued before the beginning of term 1
