Overview:
This module aims to provide the ability to communicate engineering concepts using drawing languages needed for product design and scientific reporting of practical experiences. Learners will also familiarise themselves with the basic techniques that are required in running and analysing laboratory experiments.
The module focuses on the most essential forms of engineering communications, including programming, graphical languages and reporting.
The first part of the module is concerned with graphical engineering communication, and builds up on the faculty led module ENGF0033 Design and Professional Skills 1 (Mechanical Engineering), to develop specific skills related with mechanical engineering drawing as a means of communicating engineering concepts and product design. The module provides a comprehensive introduction to drafting, sketching, and CAD transitioning techniques; focusing on mechanical engineering features and manufacturing processes. A workshop practice element will complement this section of the module, enabling the students to familiarise themselves with basic operations on workshop machinery.
The second part of the module introduces the basic techniques that are required by mechanical engineering students in running and analysing laboratory experiments. This section of the module is horizontally integrated to replace traditional discipline specific laboratory courses in the different engineering disciplines, with the objective of providing more integrated and life-long learning skills, better focused on methodologies for interpreting engineering problems, analysing data, interpreting and presenting results.
An introduction to programming languages is also provided, with a focus on data structures, and practical applications of programming.
Learning outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this module students will be able to:
- Identify and analyse mechanical drawings
- Interpret and report the results from a lab experience and analyse experimental errors and uncertainty.
- Apply the knowledge of sketching and technical drawing for the representation of mechanical engineering components.
- Use available tools from hand-sketching to 3D CAD to produce mechanical drawing.
- Understand and safely perform a range of basic operations on workshop machinery e.g. a lathe.
- Plan and perform a laboratory experience.
- Write a clear report which conforms to specified requirements of structure and formatting.
- Design, code, and compile computer programs in Python
- Convert a written algorithm specification to a procedural software design
- Evaluate application of software solutions to practical engineering problems
