Description
This module is designed for students with a background knowledge of Mammalian Physiology, but who are not enrolled in the Physiology BSc degree programme yet wish to increase their knowledge of the major physiological systems. This content excludes the central nervous system which is covered in PHOL0004 (Systems Neuroscience) and PHOL0005 (Structure & Function of the Nervous System). In addition to lectures and tutorials, the module includes practical work relating to cardiovascular & respiratory physiology and metabolic physiology & homeostasis.
After successfully completing this module you should be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the major systems (excluding the central nervous system) and their integration in animal and human physiology.
- Make simple non-invasive measurements to a) investigate cardiac and respiratory function in humans during rest and exercise (e.g. blood pressure, pulse rate, respiratory gases, blood gas saturation) and b) to investigate the dysregulation of glucose homeostasis in diabetes (e.g. blood and urine glucose measurement).
- Compile formal scientific reports to a specified length, format and deadline.
- Create spreadsheets (eg Excel) and use graphing packages (eg GraphPad Prism) in the analysis of results.
