Description
The module explores selected aspects of social change in post-communist European countries, including south-east Europe and Russia. It focuses especially on the twenty-first century. The first half of the module consists of lectures and discussion sessions to identify key social trends across the region and raise issues about where and why change is taking place. The second half of the module consists of seminars focusing on case studies of specific locations and social groups. Topics will include: wealth, poverty and class identities; urban/rural divides; labour markets and livelihood strategies; migration; gender roles; minority rights.
