Description
Module description
This is an intensive, integrated and interactive language module for beginners that works on the four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Four hours per week are devoted to developing practical language skills alongside basic grammatical and communicative competence, to enable students to participate in a wide variety of language exchanges and transactions. Students are encouraged to reflect on their learning styles and to initiate remedial action when necessary.
By the end of the year, students will be able to communicate fluently in basic written and spoken Dutch, and to express ideas about non-specialist topics. Attention is also paid to developing a critical language awareness and understanding the interrelatedness of language and culture. Two hours per week are to be set aside for self-study, over and above homework tasks and module assessments, in order to consolidate and complement classroom work.
Students need to acquire a copy of the Routledge Intensive Dutch Course (Routledge 2006). Further study material will be handed out in class and made available on the course Moodle page.
