Description
‘Ethnicity, Migration and Health’ is a module aimed at students who wish to learn about public health and its links to ethnicity and migration. More specifically, you will learn to theorise and understand ethnicity and migration, describe issues related to research exploring ethnicity and migration in the UK and elsewhere, describe patterns of ethnicity and migration in the UK and consider explanations for ethnic/migrant differences in health.
By the end of this module, you should be able to:
- Identify different approaches to understanding/theorising ethnicity and migration
- Understand the social nature of ethnicity, its dynamic nature, and its location in (unequal) social relations
- Summarise key evidence on ethnic and migrant inequalities in health
- Reflect on data limitations of much research on ethnicity, migration and health
- Theorise the main causal pathways that relate to ethnic inequalities in health and health services
- Understand the different migrant sub-groups and how they affect migrants’ health
This is an optional module for students on the MSc Social Epidemiology, MSc Population Health and MSc Global Health and Development. It is also attended by other postgraduate students from both the Faculty of Population Health Sciences and other UCL Faculties. Spaces are limited to 30.
