Description
This is a first-year foundational module which introduces students to aspects of the study of language and introductory linguistics, from a social and learner's perspective. Topics include critical discussions of the concept of language and its formal study, the relationship between language and culture, society and the mind. Students are encouraged to explore their own language background in a range of tasks, and will develop an understanding of the academic study of language and its various applications, including foreign language study.Ìý
The lectures will introduce and explain concepts and theories, and the small group seminars will offer room for discussion, case studies and practical tasks.Ìý
