Description
This module will introduce students to key concepts and debates that shape contemporary global humanitarian action.
Using diverse case studies, students will critically interrogate concepts that underpin much humanitarian action, such as neutrality and impartiality, universal human rights, and the Responsibility to Protect. Students will also engage with emerging debates and dilemmas in humanitarian action, such as the securitisation of assistance.
The module will be taught through lectures and seminars. The lectures will introduce students to key concepts, theories and debates. The programme is interdisciplinary, so students will be encouraged to consider these ideas from a range of disciplinary perspectives. Seminars will then focus on how these concepts, theories and debates have applied in particular case studies. Seminars will be discussion-led. This module will develop students’ critical thinking and research skills. Students will also develop the confidence to critically interrogate and apply concepts and theories to humanitarian dilemmas beyond the course.
