Module Content
A laboratory-based course designed as a practical introduction to biological anthropology, running in parallel with ANTH0008: Introduction to Biological Anthropology. The course introduces methods of data collection and handling, descriptive statistics, and hypothesis testing in biological anthropology. Subject areas include evolutionary theory, taxonomy, behavioural ecology, primate and hominin evolution, comparative anatomy, nutrition, demography, and resource use.
Learning Outcomes
- Understand scientific methods used in biological anthropology and have improved scientific literacy
- Identify individuals of the major primate groups
- Record and analyse basic behavioural data
- Produce a scientific report identifying, analysing and critiquing data
- Be aware of the role of more complex statistical testing to provide predictions and models
- Gain familiarity with the morphology of the key fossil hominins, and methods used to explore our evolutionary history
