Description
Content: The module firstly aims to provide students with an understanding of the history, philosophy and relative strengths and weaknesses of quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods research techniques in psychology. The first part of the module will focus on this debate.ÌýThe second part of the module will introduce some of the key techniques of qualitative research, including Thematic Analysis and Grounded Theory.Ìý In the third part of the module, students will be introduced to examples of mixed methods research in psychology.ÌýIn the final part of the module, students will be taught how, and will get an opportunity, to conduct qualitative research. Students will conduct a qualitative lab report, demonstrating their practical understanding of the ideas in the module.ÌýÌýTo demonstrate their theoretical understanding, particularly of the first part of module, students will complete an essay.
Teaching delivery: This module is normally delivered over 10 teaching weeks via a weeklyÌýtwo hour in-person sessionÌýinvolving lecture and discussion content.

Module Aims: Upon successful completion of the module, the aims are for students:
- To be able to articulate the relative merits of qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research
- To be able to demonstrate a knowledge of the history and theoretical / philosophical foundations of qualitative and mixed methods techniques
- To be able to conduct and write up a qualitative analysis
