Description
This module introduces students to the theory and practice of subtitling and captioning, a discipline that has evolved quickly in recent years.
Through a range of carefully chosen examples and exercises, students will not only develop confidence and skills in SDH and captioning, but also broaden their awareness about the requirements of d/Deaf and hard of hearing people. Linguistic and technical considerations, though shared with generic subtitling parameters, will be discussed specifically with d/Deaf and hard of hearing audiences in mind, taking into account the diversity – including cultural and linguistic differences – within this group of people. Some of the tasks will stimulate reflection on the practice and reception, while others will focus on particular captioning and SDH areas, such as paralinguistic features, music and sound effects. Other areas covered include: legislation, history and present situation of theatre captioning and SDH, subtitling/captioning for children and adults, live versus pre-recorded SDH, economic and professional aspects, and the conventions used.
This module is not language-specific: it is taught in English and all the activities are carried out in English.
