Description
The course, covering a chronological range of approximately three centuries, aims to study Rome from its emergence as a leading city-state in Italy to the eventual decline of its republican system.
The course is structured mostly chronologically, analysing the evolution and transformation of Roman society across the rise and fall of the Republic, considering its political, economic, social and cultural aspects in their historical context. These chronological topics are accompanied by wider thematic subjects which explore the emergence of and changes in political, cultural and social values across the period. Students will also engage with methodological topics as an introduction to the critical use and analysis of many different kinds of ancient evidence, from literature to archaeology, inscriptions, art and coins.
