Fellowship Application Guidelines

Fellowship Applications (Summer/Autumn 2024)

The EOI deadline for the following fellowship schemes has now passed

  • STFC Ernest Rutherford Fellowship
  • Royal Society University Research Fellowship / Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship
  • EC Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship
  • Royal Astronomical Society Norman Lockyer Fellowship

EPSRC fellowships do not have a set deadline, and we invite EOIs for those throughout the year. EOIs for EPSRC Postdoctoral and Open fellowship schemesshould be submittedat least3 months in advance of the planned application.Please see instructions below on 'How to Register Interest' to see what should be submitted. You will be informed as soon as possibleif we are able to support your application.

If you are applying for a Research Fellowship to be hosted in the Department, please make sure that you follow the below deadlines. The steps for application are also outlined below. If you have any queries, please email physast.grants@ucl.ac.uk.

All candidates will needregister to their interest with the relevant Head of Groupby the deadlines specified below, and applications can only proceed once you have received confirmation that your application will be supported- details on who to contact and what is requiredcan be found on the Research Fellowships webpage.

Steps for Application


Royal Society

University Research Fellowship
  1. Register interest with the relevant Head of Group by the Register Interest deadline - please see the main Research Fellowships page for instructions on what you need to provide, and who to contact.
  2. If it is confirmed that your application will be supported through UCL, you will be allocated an academic 'sponsor' in the department, who will be your main point of contact for the scientific side of your application. The Grants Team will assist with the costings. You should complete and return an initial Fellowship Costing Form to physast.grants@ucl.ac.uk by the Costing Form deadline. The Grants Team will create a costing for you on Worktribe and make sure that your costs are eligible and within budget.
  3. Start your application on Royal Society's FlexiGrant portal. Please give access to physast.grants@ucl.ac.uk in the Research Support role and invite the HoD using the email address physast.hod@ucl.ac.uk, as the HoD will need to complete an Institutional Support section of the application. You will also need to invite your chosen referees.
  4. Once you have finalised your costs with the Grants Team, they will submit your application on Worktribe for internal approvals by the WT Submission deadline.
  5. Make sure that your chosen referees have supplied their Letters of Support in plenty of time before the deadline - you wil not be able to submit your application until your referees have completed their section of the application.
  6. The Grants Team will let you know when your costing has been approved. You should then submit the completed application on FlexiGrant with all the required references and documents attached by the Application Submission deadline - please note that this will be a few days before the actual Funder deadline, as there will be a final check carried outby the UCL Pre-Award team.Please make sure you are available to be contacted in the days after you have submitted your application, as you may be asked to make amendments.
  7. Once all checks have been completed, the UCL Pre Award team will submit your application to the funder before the Funder deadline
Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship
  1. Register interest with the relevant Head of Group by the Register Interest deadline - please see the main Research Fellowships page for instructions on what you need to provide, and who to contact.
  2. If it is confirmed that your application will be supported through UCL, you will be allocated an academic 'sponsor' in the department, who will be your main point of contact for the scientific side of your application. Newton International Fellowship

Open Fellowship

  4. Once you have finalised your costs with the Grants Team, they will submit your application on Worktribe for internal approvals.
  5. You will need to liaise withyour academic sponsor to help with drafting the text for the 'Institutional Support' section of your application. Please do this in plenty of time before the deadline.

UKRI

Future Leader Fellowships

UKRI implementan organisational cap for this fellowship, so an internal selection process will apply.The UCL internal process will be managed by UCL Research, Innovation and Global Engagement (RIGE), and all candidates must submit an EOI for consideration to UCL RIGE. If you are selected to proceed with a full application, the Grants Team will then guide you through the costing process.

Round 9 information:

UCL will be allowed to submit 10 applications for Round 9. All interested candidates to submit an EOI to UCL RIGE by 12 noon on 29th February 2024. An internal selection process will then follow.

European Commission

Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship

  2. If it is confirmed that your application will be supported through UCL, you will be allocated an academic 'sponsor' in the department, who will be your main point of contact for the scientific side of your application. The Grants Team will assist with the costings. You should complete and return an initial Marie Curie Costing Form to physast.grants@ucl.ac.uk by the Costing Form deadline. The Grants Team will create a costing for you on Worktribe and make sure that your costs are eligible and within budget.
  3. Start your application on the EC Funding portal. UCL's PIC number is 999975620. Please add Rebecca Martin (PhysAst.Grants@ucl.ac.uk), Ying Ying Cheung (yy.cheung@ucl.ac.uk) andGiles Machell (g.machell@ucl.ac.uk)asCoordinator Contacts, so the Grants Team and theResearch Office can view your application.
  4. Once you have provided a draft copy of your application with the justification of resources, the Grants Team will submit your application on Worktribe for internal approvals by the WT Submission deadline.
  5. The Grants Team will let you know when your costing has been approved. You should then submit the completed application on EC Funding Portal with all the requireddocuments attached by the Application Submission deadline.

Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851

Research Fellowship

There is a central prioritisation process for this fellowship, details here - all interested candidates must complete both of the following steps no later than midday on 6 June 2024

You should then submit the completed application with all the required references and documents attached by the Application Submission deadline.
